Websiteblitz has sponsored the website and hosting for a Flash Mob in Perth to be held in Dec 2012. The Flash Mob is in aid of the Children’s Leukaemia and Cancer Research Foundation. The website is www.keep-the-flame-alive.com if you want the dance in the Flash Mob. A Flame for Aline is the theme for the Flash Mob and it is a story about Aline. Aline was a promising young woman who discovered she had leukaemia on the 16th of march 2011 and sadly lost her battle only 4 months later. This was after having fought a courageous battle with such dignity. If you have lost someone from cancer join in the Flash Mob in memory of the one you lost. You can also Make a $25 donation to the cause and you will be given an email address to forward a photo of your champion. This will be displayed on our Wall of Champions on the Flash Mob Day. Come on Perth we need your help for this worthy cause.

I am not sure if you are all following what has been happening in the twittersphere…..But it looks like Twitter is starting to flex some muscle! We are seeing a crackdown on apps that use twitter or tweet in their app name receive some warnings from Twitter about usage of trademarked terms such as tweet or twitter.

The biggest player that this looks like impacting is Tweetdeck.

Tweetdeck is a third party app that has been used to sort out the information overload that is twitter into some sense of order and reason. And accomplishes this quite well i might add! …here’s a link incase anyone is interested TWEETDECK

Now all was fine until tweetdeck started to intergrate other social media networks such as facebook…(nb…Facebook does such a good job already of keeping all its information orderly and accessible i do wonder why someone would want to bring the information into another third party application ….but i guess if you want access to all your information feeds in one place it makes sense…)

So here’s the rub …Twitter does not want any third party apps using their brand names such as tweet or twitter used in conjunction with any other third party application that supports other social media applications (ie facebook)

So what does this mean for tweetdeck ?? ….well either a namechange and rebranding is in the wind or tweetdeck will have to split their application into multiple parts to cover different social media applications…and seeing that the core of tweetdeck is the ability to organise information in one place i can’t see them ditching facebook so my money is on a namechange and some rebranding!…They tell me what doesnt kill you makes you stronger so i am sure we will see tweetdeck emerge out the other side of this stronger and better than it ever was!

When twitter and facebook are used together as a marketing stratergy they become an extremely useful and effective tool. When a group of likeminded people start using Twitter and Facebook for a combined marketing stratergy to help each other market individual businesses or products and start leveraging off each other this effectiveness is multiplied exponentially

Add some SEO into the mix to target some keywords and all of a sudden you have a marketing tool that blows all others out of the water…..Find out more at Perth Internet Marketing Meetup

Had a chat with Brian from QC Technologies who is implementing facebook/twitter/blogging strategies to promote products and he is getting some amazing results and some of his products now show as #1 on the organic search in google….Good job Brian! ….now if we can just get a few more people in the group implementing the strategies and leverage each other we can all share in the spoils

Was speaking to Googletamer about Google Instant as i have been seeing lots of comments around the internet about Google Instant and the Pros and Cons of this new feature …..and that is all it is ….just a new feature…

I have seen SEO experts recently claim that this is the biggest revolution and change to Google for years when in actual fact it just looks like it is a different way of displaying the same results.

Historically you would have to type in all the keywords that you are looking for before you do a search ie”black shoes Perth” to find out about black shoes in perth but with Google Instant as soon as you have finished typing “Black” Google is off trying to find results on that single keyword(which will bring back a load of garbage seeing as you have not even got to the keyword shoes yet) then as you finish typing the word “shoes” then you start to get a more refined search on black shoes wich may bring back a result of “black shoes exported all round the world for free” wich would mean that you have found somewhere to buy black shoes and it is not in perth…..So did you really need to put perth in to begin with ?…So you can see how this does change slightly the way that users may use google instant but the results for the searches are still the same….Is this a step forward ? well…i am not sure yet…If i am specifically looking for black shoes in and around perth then anything else that google brings back to me is irrelevant. So why waste bandwidth and processor time searching for “black shoes” that are not in perth just because i have not typed the word Perth in yet. But having said that i like the idea of being able to watch your search refine itself as you add keywords in to Google Instant.

So will Google Instant change things dramatically for SEO …..Not really…..if you are looking for black shoes you still need to type black shoes so i fail to see why this is being hailed as a massive change.

Looks like it could be a while before we see Google Instant in Australia tho….Probably a good thing… Let them test it out on the rest of the world and wait til it is bug free and then bring a working version of Google Instant to australia!

Here is a vid on CNET http://www.cnet.com/8301-30976_1-20016135-10348864.html

From my humble opinion …..I think that this makes it even more important than ever for sites to be ranked in the top 10 of their chosen keywords because it is so easy for people to refine their search they are never going to get to page 2 of results…..where once upon a time “some” people would go to page 2 to look at the results this now makes it so much easier to refine your search i think even less people will travel to page 2 so with Google Instant SEO and Long Tail SEO especially becomes more and more important.

Looks like Google instant has hit Australia….I noticed that as soon as i started typing in Google the other night search started coming up straight away….I think it saves hitting the refresh button but don’t really think that it is going to dramatically change the lives of all SEO professionals…..no biggie really!

We struck a problem today when we tried to view an old html website with internet explorer 8 (IE8). For some reason the background image on the html site would not show up in IE8. which was interesting seeing as it would show up using earlier versions of IE so we figured pretty quickly that it was a coding issue. Turns out to be quite a major issue wich i won’t go into but if you want the nitty gritty and have some time you might want to read this article http://www.alistapart.com/articles/beyonddoctype Its a css issue that needs the code

<meta http-equiv=”X-UA-Compatible” content=”IE=8″ />

to be inserted into the head of the document for it to render correctly using ie8

yay microsoft! nice one! …IE8 needs to be told to act like IE8 when it comes to css

There seems to be an explosion of people getting into social media and leveraging it for business purposes.

We are seeing an increase in people requiring a domain with a 1 pager capturpage to offer people a download for registering their email address. Then a link is sent to the email address with a tutorial on how to do something or some free information on a particular subject. This is for building a list of people that you can then market to. If you need a hand on setting up a domain or creating a squeezepage or email collector give us a call and we can point you in the right direction!

If you have a business then you should have an entry in google maps!

WHY ?

Because the more backlinks your site has the more credibility that is given to your site by google!

Even if you do not have a website for your business i would be putting up a google map anyway! Regardless of the backling to your site….Everyone is getting into the internet in a big way. There once was a time that if you did not have your advert in the yellow pages then your business would suffer…Don’t get me wrong! there still are uses for the yellow pages….The actual pages of the yellowpages make pretty good firelighters…But apart from that i do not have too much use for the yellow pages.

So if not the yellow pages where is everyone going to get information ?

Ask any kid in school and they will tell you the best/quickest/easiest source for information is the Internet. So get your business listed on Google Maps!!!

And how do we do this?

Well…the first step is to go to www.google.com.au and wait 5 seconds for the links across the top to load and then click on Maps.

Do a search on google maps to see if your business is already on google maps…THIS IS IMPORTANT! If you go ahead and create a second listing for your business on google maps when there is already one there then google could see that there is 2 listing for the same business and neither of them will show up in a google search. Google is like that …..One thing google does not like is dupliate content!

If you find that there is already a listing for your company online then it is possible that someone listed your company with a directory and Google has copied the directory listing details into google maps already. This is not a bad thing…You may have already been getting business referrals from google maps but didn’t know it!

If there is a listing you can claim ownership of the listing and make alterations to the text and add some pictures relevant to your business to it …It is like a mini website all by itself! Plus it gives you a map so that when someone in your local area does a search for your industry they can see that you are nearby and can contact you using the details on Maps.

But if your business is not listed….Then you need to create one from scratch

Once the Maps page loads you will see a link down the left hand side saying “Put your business on Google Maps”

Click on this link to start the process and you will be taken to the “Google Places” page

Click the link on the right hand side that says “Add New Business”

After that it is a case of filling in the forms with all the relevant details and you are off and running! You may want to have a few pictures or a logo ready to upload as images to the site (people like pictures) but it is not neccesary.

Google will want to send a pin number to a mobile or send an automated message to a land line and it will use the number that you supply as the businesses contact number to do this. (important point…If you are likely to change your phone number you might want to change the details on your google map listing first because if you don’t the only other way is to get google to send you a postcard to the business address with the pin number on it and that can take weeks.)

Once you have the pin number you plug it in next to your listing to confirm that you are the owner of that business and you are up and running!

Update

We now have a business that we are doing work for that used to have 1 store. A Google map was put up for the first store. They then set up in a second location and another google map was put up for the second location wich pointed to the same website. then the first store closed down so the phone number was cancelled and the postal address is now invalid so there is no way of verifying that we are the rightful owners of the origional google map entry…. The problem that this has caused is that because there are 2 entries with similar information neither of them are showing up on a google search….We have used the “report a problem” link on the maps entry but there seems to be no real help from google in getting the info changed….Moral of the story….Be very careful that you do not create duplicate content in google maps as the result is you may as well not have a map entry at all…Will keep you posted on if we ever get a resolution on this
